We want your ideas for new locales!

Northwest Commercial District Map (2010-06-18)

I’ve decided to solicit some of your ideas for some areas to make in Latitude as RP props. I’ve noticed there have been times where we’ve wanted to go to the police station or convenience store and we’ve just had to make due with going there ‘virtually’, so I’ve decided to make a bunch of one room buildings and I’m looking to you for ideas.

Please comment on this post with your thoughts!

I’ve also eliminated the noisy bus and I plan on making the bus stop zip you directly to these prop areas. (Although you’ll have to walk back to the nearest bus stop)

And while I have the chance, I’d like to remind everyone that you can subscribe to this blog for updates with the ’subscribe’ link above, and please keep your e-mail addresses up to date in the MUCK with the “@email #set” command.

Fix for people who time out when idling

December 11th, 2009 goldenhawk No comments

There’s been many complaints over the years of users who will idle and come back to find that their connection has timed out and disconnected or has frozen up and requires a reconnect.

I’ve gotten a bunch of people asking me ‘Can you change the idle disconnect time, because it’s kicking me off too soon’ but Latitude has never had an idle disconnect, you can be as idle as you want for as long as you want.

After much head-scratching and diagnostics, the problem was narrowed down to certain home routers which will see complete inactivity in both directions and assume the connection has gone down, and take the liberty of cutting you off.

If you have one of these routers, I’ve come up with a solution. Use the new command:

@idlemsg #on

This will cause a message to come up every minute when you’re idle. If you don’t want to see the messages, then you can gag them on your client side. It will only start sending messages once you’re five minutes idle.

This keeps your connection active even when things are very silent, and according to testers, it prevents the disconnect issues.

Latitude is now on the IPv6 internet

September 23rd, 2009 goldenhawk No comments

IPv6 is a new internet protocol that was designed, in part, to address the complete exhaustion of unused internet addresses that’s expected to arrive in 2011. IPv6 has hundreds of undecillions of addresses. If you don’t know what a undecillion is, then you’re in good company. With that much address space, you could assign an address to every atom on the surface of the earth, and still have enough left over to do another hundred earths.

IPv4, the current standard, has about 4 billion IPs. Sugnificantly less than the population of the earth, and definitely not enough for future populations and all the internet enabled gear they’re going to have.

So it’s inevitable that we’re going to have to switch over at some point or another, and I’ve chosen to get it over with.

The latitude.muck.ca server is now accessible through the more newly formed IPv6 internet.

Since any given system (including yours) can be on both the new internet and the old one simultaneously, the latitude server will still be accessible through the conventional internet, so chances are this announcement won’t affect your enjoyment of the server :) But, I expect to see the tech savvy among you logging in through our shiney new 128 bit IP! ^.^

New command: @email

July 6th, 2009 goldenhawk No comments

Recently some people have been reminding me of users such as Day and JyJyKitty that we’ve lost contact with over the years on Latitude, so I’ve decided to install some software to keep track of e-mail addresses to be used strictly for the purposes of keeping in touch with old friends, and for verification of identity for password recovery.

Everyone is encouraged to enter their e-mail address, but of course, as with everything on Latitude, it’s not mandatory.

Server Outage - June 24th apx. 3 hours

June 24th, 2009 goldenhawk No comments

The server experienced an outage for approximately 3 hours today due to a power outage at the colo facility, and subsequent failure of the generator.

The colo is in the same building I work in, so I wasn’t able to do any work for that period as well!

Guest Login Changes

June 1st, 2009 goldenhawk No comments

I’ve changed it so that guest players are now dropped directly into tourism headquarters, because the introductory menu that came up was outdated and poorly written.

From now on, new users should be able to use the web site to get the help and tutorials they need.
