Fix for people who time out when idling

There’s been many complaints over the years of users who will idle and come back to find that their connection has timed out and disconnected or has frozen up and requires a reconnect.

I’ve gotten a bunch of people asking me ‘Can you change the idle disconnect time, because it’s kicking me off too soon’ but Latitude has never had an idle disconnect, you can be as idle as you want for as long as you want.

After much head-scratching and diagnostics, the problem was narrowed down to certain home routers which will see complete inactivity in both directions and assume the connection has gone down, and take the liberty of cutting you off.

If you have one of these routers, I’ve come up with a solution. Use the new command:

@idlemsg #on

This will cause a message to come up every minute when you’re idle. If you don’t want to see the messages, then you can gag them on your client side. It will only start sending messages once you’re five minutes idle.

This keeps your connection active even when things are very silent, and according to testers, it prevents the disconnect issues.
